Hotel Feature – 137 Pillars House

Client: 137 Pillars House
While overseas, Raphael Holt explored one of Thailand's idylic resorts. Planning a honeymoon? Fantasising about tropical luxury? Look no further...

137 Pillars House in Chiang Mai is a captivating blend of history, luxury, and tranquility, making it the perfect destination for special occasions like honeymoons or a serene escape. This boutique hotel, originally a 19th-century headquarters of the East Borneo Company, has been meticulously restored to highlight its colonial teak architecture.

During my stay in March 2024, I combined relaxation with culture inside and out of the hotel. One evening, I dined at Palette, the hotel’s Michelin Guide recognised restaurant. The experience was unforgettable, with the highlight being a delicious tuna and mango steak tartare. The setting, inside the historic teak house, added a unique charm to the meal.

Mornings were often spent resting by the pool, digesting a splendid array of breakfast offerings. The staff provided cold towels, a thoughtful touch to offset the rising humidity. Afternoons included journeys to waterfalls, elephant sanctuaries and some of the greatest cow soy (northern Thai noodle soup) the world has to offer.

The attention to detail in the restoration of 137 Pillars House genuinely separates it from the vast majority of luxury hotels – it provides a retreat into the rich history and culture of Chiang Mai. The hotel’s history is integral to its charm.

The headquarters of the East Borneo Company before restoration

The original structure, with its 137 pillars, has been preserved to maintain its colonial character. The pillars, restored again as a powerful architectural statement – furnished with real purpose and care. Helpfully, they have an in-house museum about the building’s history and restoration. The museum would peak the interest of any historian, whilst also lending a real sense of place to your stay.

The restored headquarters, a stunning epicentre to the hotel.

137 Pillars House is not just a hotel; it is an experience – a journey through history wrapped in luxury. Whether you are planning a honeymoon, celebrating a special occasion, or simply seeking a retreat, 137 Pillars House offers an unforgettable stay in the heart of Northern Thailand.
